Amphetalean – For Thermogenic Energy and Fat Burning, beware of the potential side effects

amphetalean powderAmphetalean is a sports nutrition supplement manufactured by Beast Sports. It’s produced in powder form and should be mixed with water and consumed as a drink.

The main promised benefits are:

  • Burns body fat
  • Increases energy
  • Controls appetite
  • Enhances focus and clarity
  • Fast acting formula

Beast Sports has been producing supplements for over 16 years, and on the face of it Beast appear to be a respectable company, but Amphetalean is an extremely worrying product that contains prescription-only drugs.

A statement issued by the Australian Government Department of Health Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) says it all:

“Beast Amphetalean powder poses a serious risk to your health and should not be taken.”

What is Amphetalean and how does it Work?

Amphetalean appears to be primarily designed to work as a combined appetite suppressant and fat burner. The fat burning process releases calories that are then available as an energy source, so it is not surprising Amphetalean is marketed as a pre-training supplement and, if the claims of enhanced focus hold true, the formulation should also help consumers concentrate on the task at hand and get the most from their training sessions.

Key Ingredients

Each (5g) scoop provides:

  • Vitamin B1 (60mg)
  • Niacin (10mg)
  • Calcium (63mg)

Vitamin B1 is often used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and has a reputation for improving mental function, so it may help provide some of the promised mental focus and clarity. Niacin is often credited with metabolism-boosting powers, but it’s hard to say why calcium has been added to the mix. It has been tested as a potential fat burner, but showed little or no potential.

The rest of the ingredients are included as part of a proprietary blend, but there is some confusion about what the blend may contain and how much is included. Most suppliers state each scoop provides 754 g of the Amphetalean Thermogenic Matrix proprietary blend, but the Bodybuilding.com online store states a scoop provides 1,055 mg. Some of the ingredients listed also vary from one supplier to the next—this is particularly worrying because it suggests there may be more than one version of the blend available.

Most versions seem to contain either yohimbine (possibly listed as Snake Root) and/or dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE), both of which are prescription-only drugs.

There are currently no products on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods that contains yohimbine and it is a prohibited import.

Usage Instructions

For the first three days of use just one scoop should be taken twice each day, mixed with 8oz water. From day four onwards one to two scoops may be taken twice each day.

Customer Feedback

Some customers report good results, as illustrated by the following two reviews:

“I was really surprised how much energy and mental clarity I had shortly after using it. Also like the orange flavour, very good! I want to see if I will lose some weight while using it, but love it for the energy boost alone.”

“These thermos from Beast have been an excellent addition to my diet and have helped me continue to shed pounds. No jitters, great source of energy without any crash. Have used for both cardio workouts as well as weights.”

But side effects can be unpleasant:

“Although it gave me a boost of energy, upon taking the product, I was nauseated for the next half hour. It didn’t seem to matter whether or not I took it with food. It also left a horrible taste in my mouth.”

Side Effects & Health Issues

None of the online stores that supply the product mention the possibility of side, but negative issues are a distinct possibility. The Australian Government is aware of the potential dangers Amphetalean presents and issued a warning, in May 2013, pointing out the formulation contains prescription-only ingredients not suitable for unsupervised use.

The government warns existing Amphetalean users to cease supplementation immediately and dispose of any remaining product safely by handing it in at their local pharmacy.

Purchasing Options & Considerations

Amphetalean is available from many online stores, some of which ship to Australia, but any Australian citizen foolish enough to want risk their health by chancing Amphetalean may find they have wasted their money. The TGA is working with the Customs and Border Protection Services to ensure no further shipments of Beast Amphetalean powder gain entry into the country.

Guarantee

Beast does not appear to offer customers a money back guarantee.

The Bottom Line

There is some possibility Amphetalean will be able to provide some or all of the benefits Beast Sports promise, but at what risk to the health? Many other formulations can provide fat burning, and pre-training benefits without any risk to the health.  Amphetalean is a potentially dangerous option that has been banned by the government for a reason. This particular beast could be a killer, so the best advice is keep a safe distance, stay away, and search for a safer product instead.
